HEELOTIA

January 31, 2012 by · 26 Comments · Uncategorized

Heelotia is a cross-cultural simulation exercise where students are exposed to fictitous traditions in a culture very different from their own. Without providing too much information about the other culture, the students attempt to interact with one another.

Respond to at least ONE of the questions below with a comment that is reflective of a previous entry with specific examples you experienced from the simulation.

1. What barriers made communication and understanding between cultures difficult? (for example; language differences, non-verbal codes, preconceptions, anxiety)

2. Do you think the kinds of things that you experienced in this simulation really occured in the “real world” when the first settlers arrived to America? What effect do these personal communication problems have on people traveling to a new country for the very first time?

What were some interesting discoveries that you made during your interiew?

IMANI’S MUSIC

April 14, 2011 by · 18 Comments · Uncategorized

In class, we have read and discussed Imani’s Music, a story about an African grasshopper that brings music to the new world when he travels aboard a slave ship.  After reading either Nettie’s Trip South or In the Time of the Drums, submit a blog entry that compares AND contrasts the story you’ve selected with Imani’s Music. You will only have to read just one book, and be sure to include the title in your blog.  In addition, be sure to give your opinions and thoughts of both stories, citing specific examples.  Both of these books are available in the classroom and you might want to take notes if you would like to help you with your blog entry.
